How Does the Thai Cannabis Wholesale Market Really Work?
The Thai cannabis wholesale market works through several parallel channels, and the striking feature is how much flower bypasses the licensed wholesale system entirely. Product reaches dispensaries through a certified legal channel, direct-from-farm arrangements, and grey brokers, often converging at similar prices at the dispensary. Understanding wholesale here means understanding the bypass, not just the licensed pipe.
The parallel channels
Flower moves to retail through more than one route: a compliant legal wholesale channel, farm-direct arrangements that skip formal wholesale, and grey brokers. A large portion travels the routes that bypass licensed wholesale. These channels can terminate at the dispensary at broadly similar wholesale prices, which obscures how differently the product traveled to get there.
Why the bypass dominates
The bypass happens because certified legal supply is limited, and farm-direct and grey routes are cheaper and available. Dispensaries source where they can, and much of that sits outside formal wholesale. The result is that the licensed wholesale channel represents only part of the flower actually moving, which means sizing the market from licensed wholesale alone badly undercounts it.
Why it matters for market sizing
Because so much flower bypasses licensed wholesale, official wholesale figures understate the real flow, and the legal retail market is larger than the licensed supply chain that supposedly feeds it. Correctly sizing wholesale requires accounting for the bypass channels, which is difficult and is exactly the kind of reconciliation our report performs.
Through licensed, farm-direct, and grey-broker channels, with much bypassing licensed wholesale.
Limited certified supply and cheaper alternative routes.
They often converge at the dispensary.
Licensed wholesale figures undercount the real flow.
